Vịnh Hạ Long – Halong Bay

Halong bay is a marvel to behold: almost two thousand limestone karsts rise up from the ocean, creating a maze-like formation that is home to varied flora and fauna. The bay is also home for thousands of people. Semi-permanent pontoons and clusters of boats have been linked together to create everything from floating schools to local Communist party headquarters. Ladies offering bottled water and instant noodles peddle their wares from small floating baskets, and dogs that probably never have had their paws on land guard the floating homes.

It is truly a magical place. Unfortunately, 60,000 other people (per day) have drawn the same conclusion. This has led to the creation of a whole industry, catering to everyone from Vietnamese weekenders to international jet setters.

Luckily, the place is big enough for everyone. The bay, along with the nice island of Cat Ba, comes highly recommended by the seat of our pants.
