Lake Toba

The resort town of Tuk Tuk in Lake Toba, we’ve been told, was a happening place 10 or so years ago. It was the place to be if you were a raver and in need of a full moon party – that is, before Thailand lured the crowds away. Today it is a peaceful, spectacularly beautiful place to relax. The tourist infrastructure is here, just less the thousands of ravers. In other words, it’s perfect for us.

The lake is located in the caldera of an extinct volcano. Pulau Samosir, the island we’re staying on, sits in the center of this caldera. The island isn’t actually an island at all, but is attached to the mainland by a tiny isthmus, but for the sake of sounding cool, I’ll refer to it as an island.

We’ve decided to stay put for a week or so to work on our writing projects. It won’t be much longer than that, though. Martin is itching to climb some volcanoes and I don’t think I can tie him down for more than a week.
