A Penny for Your…Attention?

The man pictured above is the one responsible for drumming up local business for the buses that drive from town to town (Indonesians don’t book overpriced bus tickets at guesthouses like we tend to do. Surprise, surprise). He does this by sticking his head out the window and yelling. Once a local waves at the bus, it pulls over on the spot (regardless of location or thought of others on the road), this man jumps out, grabs them and their bags and throws them into the bus. A quick yell and the bus carries on.

I watched this go on over the course of our ride and realized a very peculiar thing about this man. He had a coin wedged into his ear. And when I say wedged, I mean wedged. It was taking up the whole of his inner ear.

Now why does this nice fellow have a coin wedged in his ear you ask? Why, it’s used to bang on a window to signal the driver to pull over when someone wants to get off.

The ear, of course, being the natural place to store a nifty gadget like that.
