Jungle Juice

Ketambe, the base for the jungle trek we just made, is situated in the province of Aceh. Because the people of Aceh are devoutly Muslim, alcohol is pretty hard to come by. Especially out in the sticks. That doesn’t mean that people don’t want to drink though.

 

This is what the locals refer to as ‘jungle juice’. I think (and hope) that it is a sort of palm wine. At least that’s how it was explained to me. The taste is somewhere in the range between godawful and hurl-inducing: yeasty, sour and slightly rancid. We had a few sips of it, enough to form an educated opinion:

 

Apart from being totally disgusting it is also very low on alcohol, tastes like hell and makes your breath stink.

 

Our verdict: Yuck.
