Komodo Dragons

There are reptiles that give me the creeps. Geckos are my buddies, but get much bigger and I start to get a little squirmy. Iguanas make me feel yucky. Take that yucky and multiply it by a really big number. The result: Komodo dragons.

They are deadly, scary creatures. Here are some facts we learned about them today:

  1. They can live up to and beyond (given the right diet) 50 years.

  2. They can go a year without eating.

  3. Their diet consists of buffalo, deer, monkey and (the occasional) human.

  4. The most recent human kill was 3 months ago.

  5. The only thing they don’t eat is horns, hair, hoofs and grass. They laugh in the face of vegetarianism. It’s all meat, all the time for these beasts.

  6. They kill with a single bite to the leg of their prey. Bacteria live in their saliva which will kill a buffalo in a week or two. All they have to do is follow and wait.

  7. They can smell blood up to 5 kilometers away.

  8. They’re nasty, nasty predators.
