Our official title right now might be Backpackers but, in all honesty, the title isn’t all that accurate. The truth is this: backpackers rarely ‘backpack’ anymore. With the abundance of available transportation options, it’s actually quite rare that you see a backpacker walking that far with their backpack on.
That being said, our backpacking prowess was recently tested when our taxi failed to show up before our (very early) flight from Bali. Our guesthouse was on a side street – nowhere near where we could find a taxi at 4:30am – so we had to lug our backpacks to a main road. It was then that I realized how much weight I was carrying. Seriously. What the hell was I carrying that was so heavy? It’s certainly not clothes. I have the rough equivalent of 3 ½ outfits in my backpack.
A little inventory done once we reached Kuala Lumpur revealed the culprit: Books. Between the two of us, we are carrying fifteen books. FIFTEEN!
I need not state the obvious, but here goes: It’s time to downsize the small, secondhand book operation we’re carrying.
It’s back to basics for the Engstroms. (Translation: only 4-5 books per person)
