The road into Leh is reached through some of the highest motorways on the planet (one is a towering 17,475 feet above sea level). These passes close in the winter, for obvious reasons. Their closure, from roughly November to March, marks the time that the Ladakhi people are almost completely cut off from the rest of the world.
How does one pass all that cold, snowed-in time, you ask?
Parties, of course! Most of the region’s festivals take place in the winter months, which is unfortunate for us – since we’re here on the cusp of winter. But, thanks to a nice initiative by the tourism board, Leh throws a Ladak Festival from September 1 – 15th.
We’re heading to the festival today, which promises masked chaam dances (you’re guess is as good as mine), archery and polo. We’ll be sure to report our all the activities in tomorrow’s posts.
