Gore Vidal’s Palimpsest – A Memoir

With a cast that includes Tennessee Williams, the Kennedys, Eleanor Roosevelt, Truman Capote, Paul Newman, Jack Kerouac, Norman Mailer and many more, Gore Vidal’s memoir was a surprisingly good read.

Along with current day meditations (well, those from the mid-90′s, when he wrote the memoir), the book is filled with quotes from past diaries, excerpts from his literary works and personal letters. It reads both as a juicy gossip column and candid first-hand account of American history in the second half of this century. As one reviewer of this memoir says, “There is no one who was anyone he has not met…” and believe me, there isn’t much he holds back about any of them.

Juicy, but surprisingly moving, I would definitely pick this one up. It’s always a joy to read about history from, as he puts it, “someone on the inside.”
