When you’re packed into a 30 year old prop plane, flying between Himalayan mountains, en route to one of the world’s most difficult airports, you deserve a little freak-out when you glance up and notice this:
Your pilot snapping photos on his phone.
Of the huge mountain you’re flying toward.
This was just one of a number of, shall we say, interesting things about our flight between Pokhara to Jomsom. I took this picture on our second attempt into the Jomsom airport. Our first attempt made it to within five minutes of the destination, only to be aborted due to high winds. The second attempt, made the following morning, went off without incident. That is, if you don’t count a pilot who didn’t get the “turn your cell phones off during flight” memo and the touchdown we made within ten feet of a cliff.
