The town of Pokhara is the third largest city in Nepal, and oh boy is it ever different from Kathmandu. We were immediately taken in by the fact that crossing a street doesn’t involve dodging crazy traffic from all directions. Its location is pretty much sublime – Pokhara sits by the shore of a stunningly beautiful lake, and the unlikely-looking Mt Machhapuchhre looks down on the town from across a ridge.
Does this sound too good to be true? Well, the Lakeside district where most foreigners end up is pretty much a miniature version of the Thamel here in Kathmandu. Virtually every building is either an internet joint, a restaurant or a shop selling trekking supplies. If you venture outside the Lakeside district you’ll find a Pokhara that looks pretty much like any other Nepali town, although it still preserves pockets of its old, medieval-looking style.
Still, we couldn’t help but think that next time we do Nepal, we’ll rent one of those hillside villas instead.
