    Food: the Endless Road Adventure

    Food: the Endless Road Adventure

This post comes with apologies for the lousy out-of-focus picture, but bear with me: there’s a story behind it.
The other day we went to restaurant Sachin in Tezpur, Assam. I was feeling a bit bored by restaurant food in general and Indian food in particular, so I decided to order myself a nice hearty tomato [...]

    A Dumb Moment

    A Dumb Moment

We both woke up at 3:30 AM and looked at the dawn-lit windows of our hotel room.
“Funny, it’s daybreak already”, said Jaime.
“Yeah, weird, it was light already at 2:30!”, I replied.
Next thing we knew, the alarm went off at 4:30. We looked out through the still dawn-lit windows. Our early sunrise was the front porch [...]

    Bacon Blogs

We’ve been pretty lax about featuring Bacon on this blog lately, so it wasn’t much of a surprise to find our proud Swine at the keyboard today, chopping away at a post of his own.

He is a multi-talented pig, our pig.

    We’re Locked In Now

    We’re Locked In Now

Well folks, this traveling by the Seat of Our Pants has been great, but there comes a time when some planning needs to take place. We have some big flights in our future and needed to get them booked while we could still afford them.

So the credit card is rip-roaring hot from all the cyber-swipes, [...]

    Road Laundry

    Road Laundry

When your backpack has space enough for exactly three outfits, you learn to mix and match with abandon. Martin’s pair of coral-colored pants (a laundry accident in KL months ago) and a blue striped shirt work perfectly together. Of course they work!

When you have only one black shirt, which everyone knows goes with everything, [...]

Book Report: Norwegian Wood, by Haruki Murakami

Book Report: Norwegian Wood, by Haruki Murakami

The term ‘Cult Book’ is generously awarded to nice-selling niche books, most often by the author’s own publishing house. Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood, however, is one of the true cult classics – a story that has managed to transcend its temporal and geographical setting and speak to multitudes of readers. By now, it has sold [...]

    What I’m Missing

    What I’m Missing

Right now nearly all of my bestest friends are gathered together to celebrate the future marriage of our friend Traci. The requested activity for the weekend by the future betrothed?

    A hip-hop dance class. Yeah, she’s awesome.

Knowing how much I like to express myself with interpretive dance, you can image how bummed I am that I [...]

    Goodbye New Friend

    Goodbye New Friend

The Nepali Nose Piercing has come to it’s untimely end. We hadn’t been together long – I gave it a good home, it left me with an infected boil. I lovingly cleaned it, it only grew more and more angry-looking. I gave it promises of a good life, it demanded to be left in Bangkok.
    So [...]

    Manentines vs Fementines

    Manentines vs Fementines

Having lived most of my life in Sweden, I never had any particular feelings about Valentine’s day. There are some halfhearted attempts at celebrating it there nowadays – cards and flowers and chocolate boxes, but nothing that could prepare me for the fully developed American institution.
It was after I met my wife that I [...]

    Inside Your Own Head

    Inside Your Own Head

The ability to spend time inside your own head is a great asset when traveling in Burma (or anywhere else for that matter). During our mad dash through the upper Irrawaddy area, we had ample opportunity to practice this skill. The last four days we’ve spent five hours on a motorbike, seven on a bus, [...]

    Travel Signs

I took this photo five years ago when exploring the Angkor Wat temple complex in Cambodia. It might be my favorite descriptive, ever.
Really? That way is that way? Great! Thanks for your help, random sign.

    The Elephant Seal is Back

    The Elephant Seal is Back

A full-grown bull Elephant Seal (Mirounga Leonina) weighs close to 6,000 lbs/2,700 kgs. It grows to be about 16ft in length and it is the largest seal on the planet.

This is me and my backpack. Don’t worry. The seal weighs more (although not by much).
