Ode to Movie Watching

We had 6 hours to kill today in Singapore and decided to do something we haven’t allowed ourselves to do in quite a while: go to the movies. We all know how expensive going to the theatre can be, and for a couple who are trying to save money, it’s a big no-no. So, it was with a little extra giddiness that we saw the new Harry Potter movie today.

Unfortunatly, it’s been so long since we’ve gone to the movies that I was lost for the first half of the movie. Yes, I know it’s not the hardest plot to follow. Can I blame jet-lag this late in the arrival to Singapore?

A side note: It’s 3am, we’re waiting for our 7am flight, so please pardon the (somewhat incredible) rendering of our favorite wizard-in-training. I have no idea how copywritten imagery goes with websites, this being our first site, so I erred on the side of a line drawing.

I have to admit, though, that I’m digging the prom-picture-hand he ended up sporting.

A Beer is a Beer is a Beer

There’s this fabulous hotel here in Singapore called Raffles Hotel. It has its roots in the colonial era,and it is one of the few remaining buildings from the good old days. It was also the place where someone once invented a cocktail called the ‘Singapore sling’.

Today, the hotel is a beautiful, well-maintained tourist trap. Since we at seatofourpants.com are not above stumbling into the occasional tourist trap, we did stop by for a drink. The Singapore Sling sold for something godawful (a day’s budget or so), so we opted for a 24 dollar round of beer instead.

Today’s lesson: a beer is a beer.

Unexpected Color

Singapore is a modern city – shopping malls, modern architecture, ultra-organized transportation systems, etc. So, it is interesting to see some unexpected splashes of color in a rather austere urban landscape.

You could eat off these streets

We’ve spent the last two days walking around Singapore. The first thing to strike me was how delightfully clean this city is. There are many laws governing the cleanliness of the city. Gum is only sold in pharmacies, probably because of its potential littering effects. Spitting is fined. Seriously. If you are seen spitting on the street, you get slapped with a ticket.

There are many of these types of rules, of which I wasn’t made fully aware of before we hit the subway (also very clean and wonderful) today. We rode from Chinatown to Little India (where we’re staying). I brought the latte I couldn’t finish along with me, because the people who designed the station forgot to provide trash cans. Well, apparently no trash cans are necessary in the subway system because everyone knows that you are fined $500 if you are found eating or drinking anything – thus making trashcans unnecessary.

Luckily Martin spied the sign (pictured above) and stuffed my latte cup into his pocket. I’m not sure how well I would have handled my latte costing us ¼ of our monthly budget. My best guess: I would have thrown a pretty nasty tantie.

Jet Lagged, Again

As expected, jet lag has us in it’s evil claws and doesn’t want to let go. We’ve found the best cure is to walk around the city until you can’t see straight, then retire to your room for napping and reading.

Truth be told, we’ve just been in bed for the last 24 hours (minus the 2 hours we spent wandering around in a confused jet lagged state). Bacon gets pretty pumped about these kind of days, though tries hide his enthusiasm by throwing himself into his “work”. He’s illiterate, of course, but isn’t aware that we know.

Anyway, we have a few days here, so should be able to climb out of the nasty haze and let you all know what the little country has to offer.

Dear readers, we’re finally back on the road again, so you may expect less Sangis-centric posts in the near future.

This is my second visit to Singapore, so I am having fun trying to show my wife the wonders of the city without at the same time appearing completely lost and confused.

We are set to spend a few more days here, after which we head North to Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

Our original thought was to continue on to Medan, Indonesia. However, in light of the recent bombing of a number of western-operated hotels in Jakarta, we feel that we may want to keep an eye on the developments for the next few days. We’ll keep you posted!
